Babies Don’t Keep — What an amazing way to put it. Enjoy life right now!

Coffee & Lilacs

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due,
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek – peekaboo.

The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew,
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo.
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

  1. Aw…this is so true. What a great reminder to cherish every moment for this time, when our little ones are little is fleeting. There will always be dishes, laundry, and bills but not a baby to rock or a little girls’ hair to tie up in a bow. Okay…now this just makes me a little sad. Why must they grow so fast???

    • I don’t know — all of my babies were born in July so we do a lot of celebrating, but I do a lot of reflection in July and how I miss my babies even though I am celebrating them growing up!

  2. I happened across this when I was watching the video of your daughter and it made me happy. I have the bottom verse of this poem that my mother cross stitched while pregnant and I had never read the entire poem. I will, one day, snap a photo and tell a story about it.

Very interested to hear you thoughts so leave a reply!
